Types of knee pain to watch out for

08/26/2023

The presentation, duration and location of knee pain can be signs of serious osteoarthritis such as rheumatoid arthritis, cruciate ligament rupture, etc.

Knee pain is a common osteochondrosis, but the pain may not be the same. The pain can be intense, dull or accompanied by small noises in the joints, a burning sensation, and signals bone and joint problems that need careful monitoring.

Knee pain with crunch

Pain accompanied by a crunching, crunching sound when bending the knee can signal an injury such as a meniscus tear (a type of cartilage in the knee area) or dislocation of the patella. In addition, this sound and pain can also be a sign of osteoarthritis. You should tell your doctor to check the cause of both pain and strange sounds coming from your knee.

Knee pain when jogging

If there is a dull, around the kneecap area when running or practicing other types of sports, you may experience patellar pain syndrome. Other accompanying symptoms include pain when sitting for long periods of time in a bent knee position, rubbing, clicking sounds when you stretch your knees.

The cause of this syndrome can be overstrenuous running and movement, as well as defective knee structure, poor running shoes, improper running posture (e.g. when the toe is facing inward), and previous injuries.

Knee pain in the early morning

If you experience painful, tight knees and mornings, then the pain subsides throughout the day, you may have rheumatoid arthritis. This is a form of inflammatory disorder in which the body's immune system attacks the joints. Some other autoimmune disorders such as lupus also cause similar symptoms. In this case, you should see your doctor as soon as possible to get a diagnosis and appropriate treatment, especially if you experience pain and stiffness in other areas of your body. If left untreated, rheumatoid arthritis can lead to joint deformity.

Knee pain when climbing stairs

One of the first signs of osteoarthritis is knee pain when going up and down stairs. This pain tends to be worse throughout the day. Knee pain caused by osteoarthritis often causes a sore sensation but can also sometimes be sharp and burning. Some other symptoms include swelling, stiffness or a feeling that the knee is being frictioned and may bend over.

Osteoarthritis is a degenerative condition in which the protective cartilage at the end of the leg bones wears out, causing the bones to rub against each other, causing pain, swelling, and loss of mobility.

Knee pain associated with a small crack or bang

This is a sign of an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tear, a common type of knee injury. The anterior cruciate ligament is the part that connects the femur to the shin and keeps the knee stable. When an injury occurs, you will hear a small crack or explosion, accompanied by severe pain. Tearing the anterior cruciate ligament causes the knee to swell quickly, difficulty straightening or bending the knee completely, and pain when you try to tilt, or put your body weight on the side of the damaged leg. You may feel like your knees are about to fall to your knees.

Sudden and severe knee pain

If you experience sudden, intense pain, accompanied by red, hot swelling, especially in the early morning, you may have gout. Gout most commonly occurs in the big toe but can also attack other joints around the leg area.

Knee pain when bending or kneeling

This is a situation encountered in people who work in jobs that require kneeling for long periods of time such as wooden floor installers, gardeners, plumbers ... These people are at risk for knee bursitis (pockets of fluid around the joint). Repeated kneeling or kneeling, especially on hard surfaces, can cause synovial irritation causing pain, swelling, redness, heat, and stiffness sometimes accompanied by fever (signs of infection). If you experience this condition, you need to see a doctor early to have an accurate diagnosis, evaluation and avoid infection.
